OBJECTIVES: To investigate the levels of serum folate and vitamin B12 (VB12) and their association with the level of neurodevelopment in preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: A total of 324 ASD children aged 2-6 years and 318 healthy children aged 2-6 years were recruited. Serum levels of folate and VB12 were measured using chemiluminescent immunoassay. The Social Responsiveness Scale and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale were used to assess the core symptoms of ASD children, and the Gesell Developmental Schedule was employed to evaluate the level of neurodevelopment. RESULTS: The levels of serum folate and VB12 in ASD children were significantly lower than those in healthy children (P<0.05). Serum folate levels in ASD children were positively correlated with gross and fine motor developmental quotients (P<0.05), and serum VB12 levels were positively correlated with adaptive behavior, fine motor, and language developmental quotients (P<0.05). In ASD children aged 2 to <4 years, serum folate levels were positively correlated with developmental quotients in all domains (P<0.05), and serum VB12 levels were positively correlated with language developmental quotient (P<0.05). In male ASD children, serum VB12 levels were positively correlated with language and personal-social developmental quotients (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Serum folate and VB12 levels in preschool ASD children are lower than those in healthy children and are associated with neurodevelopmental levels, especially in ASD children under 4 years of age. Therefore, maintaining normal serum folate and VB12 levels may be beneficial for the neurodevelopment of ASD children, especially in ASD children under 4 years of age.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that typically emerges early in childhood. This study aimed to explore the potential link between serum levels of vitamin B12 and homocysteine (Hcy) and the severity of ASD symptoms in children. METHODS: In this study, 50 children diagnosed with ASD comprised the observation group, while 50 healthy children constituted the control group. Serum levels of IL-17 A, Hcy, folate, and vitamin B12 were compared between the study group and control group, as well as among children with different degrees of ASD severity. The correlation between the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) score and serum levels of IL-17 A, Hcy, folate, and vitamin B12 was examined. Additionally, the relationship between serum IL-17 A and Hcy levels and their association with the severity ASD were explored. RESULTS: Compared to the control group, the observation group demonstrated elevated serum Hcy and IL-17 A levels alongside decreased folate and vitamin B12 levels. Individuals with severe ASD exhibited higher Hcy and IL-17 A levels but lower folate and vitamin B12 levels compared to those with mild to moderate ASD. The CARS score showed negative correlations with serum folate and vitamin B12 levels and positive correlations with serum IL-17 A and Hcy levels in ASD patients. Additionally, serum Hcy and IL-17 A levels were correlated with ASD severity. CONCLUSION: Children diagnosed with ASD presented with reduced serum vitamin B12 levels and increased levels of Hcy, potentially contributing to the onset and severity of ASD.

CONTEXT: Folate deficiency is often observed in patients with inflammatory diseases, raising questions about its role in knee osteoarthritis (OA) progression. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association of folate deficiency with the clinical and radiological severity of knee OA. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1, 2019 to January 1, 2020. Primary knee OA patients referred to orthopedic clinics in Zabol, Iran were included. Radiographic severity was gauged utilizing the Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) classification. For clinical severity, patients completed the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire. IBM SPSS v.27 facilitated the statistical analysis. RESULTS: Forty-nine knee OA patients, averaging 67.45±13.44 years in age, were analyzed. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between folate levels and both WOMAC and KL scores. The correlation was stronger between folate and KL score (Spearman correlation coefficient: -0.75) than between folate and WOMAC total score (Spearman correlation coefficient: -0.46). Additionally, a significantly higher KL score was observed in patients with folate deficiency (p=0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights a significant correlation between folate deficiency and increased severity of OA, which is evident in radiological and clinical assessments. These findings suggest that folate plays a key role in OA pathogenesis and could be a modifiable factor in its management.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the serum folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine status in Korean adolescents and adults using national data. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from participants aged ≥10 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2015. The stored serum samples were used to measure folate, vitamin B12, and homocysteine concentrations. A total of 8,016 participants were included in this analysis. Unweighted descriptive statistics and adjusted geometric means of the B vitamins and homocysteine concentrations were estimated. RESULTS: Females had higher serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations and lower serum homocysteine concentrations than males. Folate deficiency (<6.8 nmol/L) and hyperhomocysteinemia (>15 µmol/L) were found in 8.6% and 11.8% of males, respectively. Approximately 3% of males had low or marginally low vitamin B12 status (≤221 pmol/L). Folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies and hyperhomocysteinemia were found in <2% of females. Suboptimal folate status was prevalent among adolescents and young adults, while suboptimal vitamin B12 status and hyperhomocysteinemia were relatively higher in older adults. Adjusted mean homocysteine concentrations were sharply decreased from the first to second decile of serum folate in males. CONCLUSIONS: In the Korean population, the proportion of males who achieved desirable folate and homocysteine concentrations were lower than those of females. Although most Koreans have adequate vitamin B12, a suboptimal folate status is common, particularly among adolescents and young adults. These findings could establish a foundation for public health initiatives aimed at improving folate levels in the Korean population.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), characterized by hyperglycemia that develops during pregnancy, increases the risk of fetal macrosomia, childhood obesity and cardiometabolic disorders later in life. This process has been attributed partly to DNA methylation modifications in growth and stress-related pathways. Nutrients involved with one-carbon metabolism (OCM), such as folate, choline, betaine, and vitamin B12, provide methyl groups for DNA methylation of these pathways. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether maternal OCM nutrient intakes and levels modified fetal DNA methylation and in turn altered fetal growth patterns in pregnancies with and without GDM. RESULTS: In this prospective study at a single academic institution from September 2016 to June 2019, we recruited 76 pregnant women with and without GDM at 25-33 weeks gestational age and assessed their OCM nutrient intake by diet recalls and measured maternal blood OCM nutrient levels. We also collected placenta and cord blood samples at delivery to examine fetal tissue DNA methylation of the genes that modify fetal growth and stress response such as insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). We analyzed the association between maternal OCM nutrients and fetal DNA methylation using a generalized linear mixed model. Our results demonstrated that maternal choline intake was positively correlated with cord blood CRH methylation levels in both GDM and non-GDM pregnancies (r = 0.13, p = 0.007). Further, the downstream stress hormone cortisol regulated by CRH was inversely associated with maternal choline intake (r = - 0.36, p = 0.021). Higher maternal betaine intake and serum folate levels were associated with lower cord blood and placental IGF2 DNA methylation (r = - 0.13, p = 0.049 and r = - 0.065, p = 0.034, respectively) in both GDM and non-GDM pregnancies. Further, there was an inverse association between maternal betaine intake and birthweight of infants (r = - 0.28, p = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, we observed a complex interrelationship between maternal OCM nutrients and fetal DNA methylation levels regardless of GDM status, which may, epigenetically, program molecular pathways related to fetal growth and stress response.

Background: The present study is the first to explore the correlation between serum folic acid (FA) level and penile arterial peak systolic velocity (PSV) as measured via penile color Doppler ultrasonography (PDU), which directly reflects endothelial function in the penile artery. Materials and methods: A total of 244 consecutive erectile dysfunction (ED) patients and 72 healthy controls, recruited from the Andrology department and the Healthy Physical Examination Center of our hospital, respectively, from June 2020 to April 2022, were included in the study. Serum FA was measured in ED patients and healthy controls, and PDU examinations were conducted for all eligible ED patients. The Pearson method was used to evaluate the correlation between FA levels and PDU parameters in ED patients. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was also performed to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of these parameters for prediction of arteriogenic ED. Results: After the PDU test, the average serum FA level among patients diagnosed with arteriogenic ED was 8.08 ± 2.64 ng/ml, lower than the average of 10.78 ± 2.87 ng/ml among healthy controls. There were no statistically significant inter-group differences on any basic parameters, including age, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride. For further analysis, we divided the arteriogenic ED group into three subgroups by PSV range to compare serum FA levels among these subgroups. The mean FA levels in each of these groups were 5.97 ± 1.51ng/ml, and 8.21 ± 2.37ng/ml, and 10.55 ± 2.56ng/ml, while the corresponding PSV values were 15.75 ± 2.39cm/s, 23.53 ± 2.19cm/s, and 32.72 ± 1.64cm/s. Overall, a positive correlation between PSV and FA level was found among patients with arteriogenic ED (r=0.605, P<0.001). Furthermore, when FA level was used, with a cut-off value of 10.045 ng/ml, as a criterion to distinguish patients with arteriogenic ED from healthy controls, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.772 (95% confidential interval: [0.696, 0.848]), for a sensitivity of 0.611 and specificity of 0.824. Conclusion: Serum FA level is positively correlated with PSV in ED patients, and has the ability to distinguish patients with arteriogenic ED from healthy controls. Taking these findings together, FA deficiency should be regarded as an independent risk factor for arteriogenic ED.

BACKGROUND: While additional folic acid (FA) treatment has a neutral effect on lowering overall vascular risk in countries that mandate FA fortification of food, meta-analytic data suggest that folate supplementation reduces stroke risk in certain patient subgroups, and among people living in countries without mandatory folate food fortification. However, the burden of folate deficiency among adults with stroke in the world's poorest continent is unknown. PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence and predictors of folate deficiency among recent ischemic stroke survivors. METHODS: We analyzed data among consecutively encountered ischemic stroke patients aged ≥18 years at a tertiary medical center in Kumasi, Ghana between 10/2020 - 08/2021. We identified a modest sample of stroke free adults to serve as a comparator group. Fasting serum folate was measured using a radioimmunoassay and a cut-off of 4ng/mL used to define folate deficiency. Factors associated with serum folate concentration were assessed using a multilinear regression model. RESULTS: Comparing stroke cases (n = 116) with stroke-free comparators (n = 20), mean folate concentration was lower among stroke cases (7 ng/ml vs. 10.2 ng/ml, p = 0.004). Frequency of folate deficiency was higher among stroke cases vs. stroke-free controls (31% vs 5%, p = 0.02). Male sex (beta coefficient of -2.6 (95% CI: -4.2, -0.9) and LDL (ß: -0.76; -1.4, -0.07) were significantly associated with serum folate concentration. CONCLUSION: Almost one in three ischemic stroke survivors have folate deficiency potentially accentuating their risk for further adverse atherosclerotic events in a setting without folate fortification. A clinical trial of folate supplementation among stroke survivors is warranted.

Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a key enzyme of homocysteine metabolism participating in the folate cycle. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of MTHFR C677T and MTHFR A1298C gene polymorphisms with serum folate, cobalamin (Cbl) and homocysteine (Hcy) concentrations in healthy Greek adults. The MTHFR C677T and A1298C gene polymorphisms were genotyped in 383 healthy Greek adults (199 men and 184 women) using polymerase chain reaction and reverse hybridization. Serum folate, Cbl and total Hcy (tHcy) levels were determined using immunoassays methods. Among the 383 individuals, 73 (19.1%) were normal (CC), 202 (52.7%) were heterozygous (CT) and 108 (28.2%) were homozygous (TT) regarding the MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism, while 263 (68.7%) were normal (AA), 105 (27.4%) were heterozygous (AC) and 15 (3.9%) were homozygous (CC) regarding the MTHFR A1298C gene polymorphism. The overall C and T allele frequency for the MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism was 45.4% and 54.6%, respectively, while the overall A and C allele frequency for the MTHFR A1298C gene polymorphism was 82.3% and 17.6%, respectively. The MTHFR C677T and not the A1298C gene polymorphism had a significantly influence on serum folate and tHcy levels. The individuals with 677TT genotype had significantly lower serum folate and significantly higher serum tHcy levels than individuals with 677 CC or CT genotypes. Serum folate and tHcy levels are influenced by the existence of the MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism (mainly 677TT genotype). Individuals with low serum folate levels and/or high serum tHcy levels should be further investigated for a possible existence of MTHFR C677T and not A1298C gene polymorphisms, with aim to determine the suitable treatment.

Background: To investigate relationships between five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in four maternal genes involved in one carbon metabolism and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and small-for-gestational-age (SGA). Methods: This was a prospective mother and child cohort study in Wuqiang, China. Pregnant women (n = 939) were recruited from Jun 2016 to Oct 2018. Pregnancy outcomes (PTB, LBW, and SGA) were extracted from medical records and other information including age at childbearing, maternal education level, gravidity, parity, pre-pregnancy weight and height was collected by using a structured questionnaire. The maternal serum folate concentration was measured by using Abbott Architect i2000SR chemiluminescence analyzer in the first prenatal care visit. DNA genotyping of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T and A1298C, methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) A66G, methionine synthase (MTR) A2756G, and thymidylate synthetase (TYMS) rs3819102 was processed by Sequenom MassARRAY iPLEX Platform. Univariate and multivariate logistics regression analysis were used to test the relationships between 5 SNPs and PTB, LBW, SGA. Results: Totally, 849 dyads of women and infants were included in the analysis. The prevalence of PTD, LBW, and SGA were 3.76%, 1.58%, and 5.31% respectively. The homozygote frequencies of MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, MTRR A66G, MTR A2756G, and TYMS rs3819102 were 44.2%, 1.4%, 6.7%, 1.3%, and 3.2%, and the alt allele frequencies were 66.1%, 10.8%, 24.9%, 10.5%, and 20.5% respectively. The average serum folate concentration was 11.95 ng/mL and the folate deficiency rate was 0.47%. There were no significant associations between MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, MTRR A66G, MTR A2756G, TYMS rs3819102 alleles and PTD, LBW, SGA (p > 0.05). Conclusions: In the population with adequate folate status and low prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes, MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, MTRR A66G, MTR A2756G, TYMS rs3819102 alleles may not be related to PTD, LBW, and SGA.

INTRODUCTION: Anemia in pregnancy is an important global public health problem. It is estimated that 38% of pregnant women worldwide are anemic. In Africa, literature from observational studies show 20% of maternal deaths are attributed to anemia. In Uganda, 50% of pregnant women have iron deficiency anaemia. The proportion of pregnant women receiving Iron-Folic acid (IFA) supplementation has improved. However, the number of IFA pills consumed is still low. We carried out a randomized controlled trial to determine the effect of dispensing blister and loose packaged IFA pills on adherence measured by count on next return visit and hemoglobin levels among pregnant women at two National Referral Hospitals in Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: This trial was conducted between April and October 2016. Nine hundred fifty pregnant women at ≤28 weeks were randomized to either the blister (intervention arm) or loose (control arm) packaged IFA. The participants completed the baseline measurements and received 30 pills of IFA at enrolment to swallow one pill per day. We assessed adherence by pill count and measured hemoglobin at four and 8 weeks. The results were presented using both intention-to-treat and per-protocol analysis. RESULTS: There were 474 participants in the control and 478 in the intervention arms. Adherence to IFA intake was similar in the two groups at 4th week (40.6 and 39.0%, p = 0.624) and 8th week (51.9 and 46.8%, p = 0.119). The mean hemoglobin level at 4 weeks was higher in the blister than in the loose packaging arms (11.9 + 1.1 g/dl and 11.8 + 1.3 g/dl, respectively; p = 0.02), however, similar at week 8 (12.1 + 1.2 and 12.0 + 1.3, respectively; p = 0.23). However, over the 8-week period blister packaging arm had a higher change in hemoglobin level compared to loose package (blister package 0.6 ± 1.0; loose packaging 0.2 ± 1.1; difference: 0.4 g/dL (95% CI: 0.24-0.51 g/dL); p = 0.001. There were no serious adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed no effect of blister packaging on IFA adherence among pregnant women. However, our findings showed that blister packaged group had a higher hemoglobin increase compared to loose iron group. TRIAL REGISTRATION: No. PACTR201707002436264 (20 /07/ 2017).

Inflammatory states are associated with anemia of chronic disease and acute infection. Hepcidin, a regulator of iron metabolism, is involved in iron pathophysiology during inflammation. We investigated biochemical characteristics in children with anemia from different causes. Four patient groups (n = 38; mean age: 12.44 ± 4.35 years) were studied: (1) inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, 10 patients); (2) iron deficiency anemia (IDA, 12); (3) celiac disease (CD, 8); (4) acute infection (AI, 8). Laboratory measurements were evaluated at diagnosis: blood count, serum iron, transferrin, ferritin, vitamin B12, folic acid, CRP, erythropoietin, hepcidin and soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR). IDA patients had the lowest Hgb (6.9 ± 1.7 g/dL), MCV (63.2 ± 7.2 fL), iron (16.8 ± 13.5 µg/dL), ferritin (4.5 ± 4.5 ng/mL) and hepcidin (3.1 ± 0.8 ng/mL) values, and the highest transferrin and sTfR values. AI patients had the highest ferritin (156.2 ± 124.5 ng/mL), CRP (144.6 ± 94 mg/L) and hepcidin (74.67 ± 12.3 ng/ml) values. Overall, hepcidin levels correlated with CRP and with ferritin (r = 0.83 and 0.85, respectively). Elucidating specific etiology-related biochemical profiles in pediatric patients with anemia from different causes using a combination of laboratory biomarkers, including hepcidin, can help physicians treat the anemia.

BACKGROUND: Deficiencies in vitamin A and D and disorders in the vitamin B complex are often present in people with chronic liver diseases. So far, the serum concentrations of these vitamins have not yet been studied in dogs with congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunts (EHPSS), who also have some degree of liver dysfunction. The objective was to assess serum vitamin concentrations in dogs with EHPSS from diagnosis to complete closure. A prospective cohort study was performed using ten client-owned dogs with EHPSS, closed after gradual surgical attenuation. Serum concentrations of vitamin A, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, folic acid, cobalamin and methylmalonic acid (MMA) were measured at diagnosis prior to institution of medical therapy, prior to surgery, and three months after gradual attenuation and complete closure of the EHPSS. RESULTS: At diagnosis, median serum concentrations of vitamin A, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and folic acid were 18.2 µg/dL (8.8 - 79.5 µg/dL), 51.8 ng/mL (19.4 - 109.0 ng/mL), and 8.1 µg/L (5.2 - 14.5 µg/L), respectively, which increased significantly postoperatively (88.3 µg/dL (51.6 - 182.2 µg/dL, P=0.005), 89.6 ng/mL (49.3 - >150.0 ng/mL, P =0.005), and 14.8 µg/L (11.5 - 17.7 µg/L, P <0.001), respectively). Median serum cobalamin concentrations were 735.5 ng/L (470 - 1388 ng/L) at diagnosis and did not significantly decrease postoperatively (P =0.122). Both at diagnosis and three months postoperatively 7/10 dogs had hypercobalaminemia. CONCLUSIONS: Serum concentrations of vitamin A, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and folic acid significantly increase after surgical attenuation. Nevertheless, persistent hypercobalaminemia is suggestive of ongoing liver dysfunction, despite successful surgery.

The characterization of folate status in subjects at risk of deficiency and with altered vitamin homeostasis is crucial to endorse preventive intervention health policies, especially in developed countries. Several physiological changes (i.e. pregnancy), clinical situations and diseases have been associated to increased requirement, impaired intake and absorption of folate. However clinical practice guidelines (CPG) endorse folic acid supplementation generally discarding the use of its determination in serum to assess the risk of deficiency and/or its concentration at baseline. Poor confidence on the diagnostic accuracy of serum folate assays still persists in the current CPGs although recent standardization efforts have greatly improved inter-method variability and precision. In this review we critically appraise the methodological issues concerning laboratory folate determination and the evidence on the potential adverse effects of folic acid exposure. The final aim is to build a sound background to promote serum folate-based cost-effective health care policies by optimizing folic acid supplementation in subjects at risk of deficiency and with altered folate homeostasis. Our first result was to adjust in relation to current serum folate assays the thresholds reported by CPGs as index of folate status, defined on the association with metabolic and hematologic indicators. We identify a statistically significant difference between the estimated thresholds and accordingly show that the assessment of folate status actually changes in relation to the assay employed. The use of the method-dependent thresholds here reported may pragmatically endorse the stewardship of folic acid supplementation in clinical practice and increase the cost-effectiveness of health care policies.

Importance: The associations of serum folate and vitamin B12 levels with cardiovascular outcomes among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain unclear. Objective: To investigate the associations of serum folate and vitamin B12 levels with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among individuals with T2D. Design, Setting, and Participants: This prospective cohort study included 8067 patients with T2D who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 through 2014 and NHANES III (1988-1994). American Diabetes Association criteria were used to define T2D. Data were analyzed between October 1, 2020, and April 1, 2021. Exposures: Serum folate and vitamin B12 levels. Main Outcomes and Measures: Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to compute hazard ratios and 95% CIs for the associations of serum folate and vitamin B12 levels with risks of CVD and all-cause mortality. Two multivariable models were constructed. Restricted cubic spline analyses were used to examine the nonlinear association of serum folate levels and vitamin B12 levels with CVD mortality, and nonlinearity was assessed using the likelihood ratio test. Results: This cohort study included data from 7700 participants in the folate analysis (mean [SE] age, 57.8 [0.3] years; 3882 men [weighted, 50.5%]; median serum folate level, 12.1 ng/mL [IQR, 7.1-19.5 ng/mL]) and 4860 participants for the vitamin B12 analysis (mean [SE] age, 57.8 [0.3] years; 2390 men [weighted, 50.7%]; median serum vitamin B12 level, 506.1 pg/mL [IQR, 369.1-703.5 pg/mL]). During 72 031 person-years of follow-up, 799 CVD deaths were documented for the folate analysis, and during 43 855 person-years of follow-up, 467 CVD deaths were reported for the vitamin B12 analysis. Nonlinear associations were observed for serum levels of folate (P = .04 for nonlinearity) and vitamin B12 (P = .04 for nonlinearity) with risk of CVD mortality among patients with T2D. Compared with participants in the second quartile of serum folate levels (7.1-12.1 ng/mL), the hazard ratios for CVD mortality were 1.43 (95% CI, 1.04-1.98) for participants in the lowest serum folate level quartile (<7.1 ng/mL) and 1.03 (95% CI, 0.74-1.44) for participants in the highest quartile (≥19.5 ng/mL). In addition, compared with participants in the second quartile of serum vitamin B12 levels (369.1-506.0 pg/mL), the hazard ratios for CVD mortality were 1.74 (95% CI, 1.20-2.52) for participants in the lowest quartile (<369.1 pg/mL) and 2.32 (95% CI, 1.60-3.35) for participants in the highest quartile (≥703.5 pg/mL). Similar patterns of association were observed for all-cause mortality (nonlinearity: P = .01 for folate and P = .02 for vitamin B12). Conclusions and Relevance: This cohort study found that both low and high serum levels of vitamin B12 as well as low serum levels of folate were significantly associated with higher risk of CVD mortality among individuals with T2D.

Women's nutritional status during pregnancy can have long-term effects on children's brains and cognitive development. Folate and choline are methyl-donor nutrients and are important for closure of the neural tube during fetal development. They have also been associated with brain and cognitive development in children. Animal studies have observed that prenatal folate and choline supplementation is associated with better cognitive outcomes in offspring and that these nutrients may have interactive effects on brain development. Although some human studies have reported associations between maternal folate and choline levels and child cognitive outcomes, results are not consistent, and no human studies have investigated the potential interactive effects of folate and choline. This lack of consistency could be due to differences in the methods used to assess folate and choline levels, the gestational trimester at which they were measured, and lack of consideration of potential confounding variables. This narrative review discusses and critically reviews current research examining the associations between maternal levels of folate and choline during pregnancy and brain and cognitive development in children. Directions for future research that will increase our understanding of the effects of these nutrients on children's neurodevelopment are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic and fatal neurodegenerative disease; accumulating evidence suggests that vitamin deficiency is associated with the risk of AD. However, studies attempting to elucidate the relationship between vitamins and AD varied widely. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin levels and AD in a cohort of the Chinese population. METHODS: A total of 368 AD patients and 574 healthy controls were recruited in this study; serum vitamin A, B1, B6, B9, B12, C, D, and E were measured in all participants. RESULTS: Compared with the controls, vitamin B2, B9, B12, D, and E were significantly reduced in AD patients. Lower levels of vitamin B2, B9, B12, D, and E were associated with the risk of AD. After adjusting for age and gender, low levels of vitamin B2, B9, and B12 were still related to the risk of AD. In addition, a negative correlation was determined between vitamin E concentration and Activity of Daily Living Scale score while no significant association was found between serum vitamins and age at onset, disease duration, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire score. CONCLUSION: We conclude that lower vitamin B2, B9, B12, D, and E might be associated with the risk of AD, especially vitamin B2, B9, and B12. And lower vitamin E might be related to severe ability impairment of daily activities.
